Get back here! --- RoK for Sudar

Description

The day was cool and dreary. Weak sunlight filtered through the clouds above, and a faint breeze pushed them across the sky. Sudar stood poised at the edge of the valley, sniffing the air.

“Are they around here, boy?” Adam asked the piebald, scratching him behind his ears.

Sudar let out an affirmative wuff, and the pair set out at a swift trot into the valley. He idly contemplated who he would have to round up to complete his final Rite. The piebald suspected that the two tokotas he had hung out with for Cica’s Rite would be among the three he would need to fetch, which would be a relatively easy task in his opinion. Nanook, though cunning, was not innately a tease. If he could find the black, he would cooperate. Navajo would probably put up a bit of a fight. He was too headstrong and cocky to cooperate off the bat.

… But who would the last tokota be? Sudar felt an ominous sinking in his stomach as a familiar scent hit his nose. He glanced down from the ice cliff he had been wandering on into the small grove of trees below.

A graying piebald grinned up at him, tail waving. The blue tag in her ear taunted him.

“Heya Sudar!” Cica called, “Want to play a game?”

Sudar cursed inwardly as Adam spotted her and gasped in surprise. Though Cica was rather mild-mannered, such as himself, she also had a streak of cat-like personality. He had not made himself an easy catch during her Rite of Knowledge, and now it seemed like she wanted to hand out a small dose of revenge.

“… Not particularly,” he replied, casting around for the scent of the other two tokotas.

Cica frowned, tail slowing as Sudar tried to turn away and Adam tugged the reins against him. “If you play my game, I’ll help you catch the other two!” she called to him.

Sudar paused for a moment before sighing and following Adam’s urges to turn back around. “Fine. What’s the game?”

“Tag! You’re it” Cica barked, darting off into the forest.

Sudar and Adam stood stunned for a moment before a seed of irritation took root, and the pair sprang into action.

They chased Cica for what seemed like hours around the valley. Sometimes she would pause, letting them get close enough to touch her, but she always darted off before they could get any sort of restraint on her. More than once, Sudar stopped giving chase, and spotted Nanook and Navajo observing their antics idly from afar. However, when the piebald and his handler tried abandoning the game of Tag, Cica was sure to pop up and drag them on another wild goose chase.

Sudar could feel his irritation growing as Cica once again led them through the grove of trees. Adam, as if sensing his displeasure, murmured soothingly, urging him onwards. Yet Cica remained out of reach.

“CICA!!!” The piebald roared as he pushed his final strength into one last grand chase.

“Woah!” Adam shouted in alarm as the tawny exploded into action beneath him.

The graying tokota yelped in surprise and darted off, mildly alarmed.

Not far away, Navajo and Nanook observed the chaos. Nanook chucked, ears pricked forward to listen to the great chase. “How long have they been at it now?” the old toko asked the wolverine.

“Hmph!” Navajo snorted scornfully. “Probably close to 2 and a half hours by now. If I was the one catching her, I would’ve had her roped in under an hour!”

Nanook turned his head to the younger toko. “Mmmmm, don’t be too sure, young one,” he said gently. “True, you could be faster than Sudar there, but are you more cunning than Cica?”

Navajo sputtered angrily at the jab, but the black tokota merely smiled and went back to listening to the chase below. It seemed Sudar had finally subdued his first tokota, as Cica was whining in dismay, and there was no long the sharp sound of paws breaking through crusted-over snow.

Nanook rose, shaking himself. “Come along, youngster,” he called to the fuming brown. “It’s time for us to play our parts.”
